京都から

千年の都にて思うこと

人間がつくった法で
裁けなくとも
そう　おそらく
厳しき因果の理法によって
裁かれるのだろう

千年の流れが
そこはかとなく　ささやいている

他者の幸せを喜べるか
他者の幸せを祈っているか
他者の幸福に尽くしているか

一生涯
自己に生きていく
わけなのだから
一生涯
自己を信じ切って
生きることに尽きる

教条主義の沼にはまらぬよう
冷笑主義の霧に巻き込まれぬよう
自己を見失ってはならない

千年の清き風が
北山から　静かに吹く

一番最後でいい
自己の幸せなんて

実に
真の都人だと思う

だが
それは自己を忘れることではない

From Kyoto

— Reflections in the Thousand-Year Capital —

Even if not judged
by the laws made by men,
surely—
by the stern law of cause and effect,
justice will be done.

The flow of a thousand years
whispers softly, unseen.

Can you rejoice in another’s joy?
Do you pray for another’s peace?
Do you devote yourself
to the happiness of others?

For a lifetime,
we live within ourselves—
and for a lifetime,
we must believe in ourselves
without doubt.

Do not sink into the swamp of dogma.
Do not be lost
in the mist of cold irony.
Never lose sight
of your true self.

From Kitayama,
a pure wind of a thousand years
blows gently.

It’s all right
if my happiness
comes last.

Truly—
that is the spirit
of a noble Kyoto soul.

Yet,
it does not mean
to forget oneself.

この詩に込めた思い

千年の時を生き続ける京都の国土世間に、人間の本質的な考察を重ねた。
人がつくる法は一時的でも、因果の理法は永遠である。
他者を思いやる心と、自己を信じる心——その二つがあってこそ、人間は真に自由に生きられる。
教条でも冷笑でもなく、静かな信念として生きる姿こそ、真の都人の心なのだと思う。
自己の幸せを急がず、他者の幸福に尽くす中でこそ、ほんとうの幸福が芽生える。

Thoughts Behind the Poem

In Kyoto — a land and world that has breathed for a thousand years —
I sought to reflect upon the very essence of human existence.
The laws made by men are transient,
but the law of cause and effect endures eternally.
Only through both compassion for others
and unshakable faith in oneself
can one live in true freedom.
To live not by dogma, nor by cold irony,
but with a quiet conviction—
that, I believe, is the spirit of a true Kyoto soul.
True happiness does not come by haste;
it blossoms only through one’s devotion to the happiness of others.
